Rashidah Khan-Haqq, M.Phil
Position: Environmental Health and Analytical Services Manager


Rashidah is an Environmental Chemist with a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of the West Indies. She is Team Leader of the Environmental Health and Analytical Services Department at ESL and has significant experience in air, soil and water quality monitoring and assessment particularly in industrial and commercial sectors in Jamaica. Mrs. Khan-Haqq is trained as assessor for the ISO 17025 standard.

Mario-Christie


Mario Christie, BSc.
Position: Chemical Analyst and Deputy Manager


Mr. Christie is a holder of a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of the West Indies. He is an analytical chemist & project officer whose focus primarily includes food safety, water quality assessments and quality control. He is trained in the principles of HACCP and other food safety management systems as well as various ISO management systems. His work involves conducting various chemical analyses, validation and verification of analytical methods, food safety assessments including HACCP/GMP audits and quality assurance related analyses, HACCP plan development as well as standard operating procedures and good manufacturing practices development, implementation and training. Mr. Christie aids in overseeing the technical operations of EAS and plays an integral role in the maintenance and improvement of the EAS Quality Management System.

Kearion Simpson
Position: Quality Manager / Microbiologist


Kearion is a trained analyst with over fourteen years’ experience conducting chemical and microbiological analyses on food, air, water & wastewater ensuring accuracy, traceability and reproducibility. Ms. Simpson has significant experience in quality management and as the Quality Manager of the ISO/IEC 17025 accredited QEH laboratory she ensures that only the current best practices are implemented in the daily operations of the laboratory. She is instrumental in the management of the Quality Management System ensuring that all applicable standards of quality are met and maintained.

Ms. Simpson has significant training in HACCP Auditing, Documenting of HACCP prerequisite Programs and Development of HACCP Plans which allows her to be of support to the manufacturing sector.

michelle dawkins


Michelle Dawkins, BSc.
Position: Deputy Quality Manager


Michelle Dawkins is a graduate of the UWI, Mona with a BSc (honours) in Applied Chemistry with a minor in Food Processing. She is a trained Chemical Analyst and Deputy Quality Manager of the ISO 17025 Accredited Laboratory. Her focus at ESL is primarily on water quality assessments, quality control, quality systems management and food safety systems assessments and implementation. She is trained to conduct occupational health and safety assessments and in the principles of HACCP and other food safety management systems, as well as ISO 17025.

As Deputy Quality Manager at ESL-QEHL, Ms. Dawkins has the shared responsibility for the continuous improvement and management of the QEHL accredited Quality Management System by ensuring control of non-conforming work through the conduct of Root Cause Analyses and Risk Assessments.

Shadain Ellis, BSc.
Position: Chemical Analyst/Client Manager


Shadain Ellis is a graduate of the UWI, Mona and a proud holder of a Bachelor of Science degree major in Food Chemistry. She has training in food safety with focuses on HACCP, GMP and GAP Assessment. Ms. Ellis is a trained Chemical Analyst and brings to the team her experience as a teacher at the secondary level. Her work at ESL includes (but not limited to) conducting chemical analyses on water and wastewater, environmental monitoring activities, verification/calibration of instruments and maintaining and developing client-business relationships. Ms. Ellis' expertise lies in:

  • Designing and executing experiments
  • Analysing chemical data
  • Database management

Shadain further compliments the critical functions of the QEH Laboratory through her function on the Quality Management Team as the Purchasing Personnel tasked with managing the laboratory inventory and service provider databases.

Monique Mighty


Monique Mighty
Position: Analytical Microbiologist & Deputy Technical Manager


Monique Mighty holds a BSc. in Applied Science from University of Technology with a major in Environmental Science. She is an Analytical Microbiologist and the Deputy Technical Manager for the Microbiology Laboratory. She specializes in Food, Water and Environmental Microbiology. She has training in food safety systems including HACCP/GMP and other ISO management system. Ms. Mighty is a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual trained by the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA).

She is tasked with ensuring that the operations of the Microbiology lab are consistent with the requirements of EHAS’ Quality System and other standards. This includes but is not limited to; the upkeep of reference microorganisms, research and development of new analytical methods/techniques. Ms. Mighty is also a client manager who is responsible for the liaison with clients re sample analysis, sample handling and reporting. Her areas of expertise includes:

  • Microbiological Investigations
  • Assessment of threats to Food Safety
  • Microbiological Quality Control
  • Laboratory Audits


Mandesa Jackson
Position: Microbiologist


Ms. Jackson is a graduate of the University of the West Indies Mona with a BSc (Honours) in Microbiology. She specializes in microbiological analysis of food, water and environmental samples.

Ms. Jackson oversees work in the microbiology laboratory, manages assigned QEHL Client accounts and conducts various microbiological analyses using a variety of approved standards and techniques. She has experience in various molecular techniques and has done extensive research in Coconut Lethal Yellowing at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

Trevaughan Thompson


Trevaughn Thompson
Position: Lab Technician


Trevaughn C.Thompson a recipient of the Caribbean award for Technical Drawing. Mr Thompson is a very skilled and competent in stock management laboratory analysis and utility maintenance. Mr Thompson is also responsible for the organizing and setup of various procedures. His effective focus and efficiency on quality makes him an important asset to the ESL’s team.

Marvin Betton


Marvin Betton, BSc -
Position: Chemical Analyst


Marvin Betton is a chemical analyst and project officer with a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Biotechnology and minor in food chemistry. He serves as the Deputy Technical Manager for the Chemistry Department of QEHL. Mr. Betton is an MSc Candidate whose focus is on occupational, environmental, safety and health (OESH) and water quality assessments. His work involves an array of chemical testing, air quality testing and sampling.

Marvin remains a part of the EHAS system of ensuring quality and integrity in serving the wider environment.

Delroy Stein, BSc.
Position: Chemical Analyst


Delroy Stein is a graduate of the UWI, Mona where he obtained a BSc in Applied Chemistry and is also a proud holder of a certificate in Project Management awarded from the UWI Open Campus. He is a trained and competent chemical analyst of EHAS’ Quality and Environmental Health Laboratory and his contribution to its daily operations involves but is not limited to; conducting various chemical analyses, developing and maintaining relations with clients, as well as sample collection.

Garfield-Williams


Garfield Williams-BSc. (Hons.), MPhil candidate
Position: Analytical/Bio-organic Chemist


Garfield Williams is an Analytical/Bio-organic Chemist, with experience in scientific research, environmental monitoring, chemical analyses on water (waste, potable, raw) and food samples. He is also proficient in operating various analytical instruments and sampling protocols (air, water and soil).

His main areas of expertise include Analytical Chemistry, Water Quality Assessment, Laboratory Assessments, and Analytical Method Validation.

He is currently enrolled as a postgraduate student in the department of chemistry, UWI, Mona, Investigating the products of transformation of Stemodin analogues by Beauveria bassiana ATCC 7159 to design an active site model of its Cytochrome P450 enzyme and generate more bioactive novel compounds. During his academic career he has received a number of awards, including, The University of the West Indies Academic Bursary and Post Graduate Scholarships. He is the current president of the Chemistry Association of Postgraduate Students and Resident Advisor at Rex Nettleford Hall at said institution.

Shandae Bascoe
Position: Technical Assistant


Shandae Bascoe is responsible for -among other functions- the receipt of samples to ESL, subcontracting of sample analysis and the preparation of client reports. In his capacity he coordinates and corresponds with the members of Environmental Health and Analytical Services’ Quality and Environmental Health Laboratory and its Partners. Mr. Bascoe’s dedication makes him an invaluable member of the ESL team.

Vianzo-Rowe


Vianzo Rowe
Position: Sampling Technician


Rowe is a sampling technician with training in sampling techniques that meets international standards. He has over twenty years’ experience collecting samples of various matrices including air, water, and soil from different sites across Jamaica.

Mr. Rowe is a key member of the QEHL team. He is responsible for ensuring samples are transported to the laboratory in the time and conditions required to ensure quality data is obtained from the analysis. Mr. Rowe has demonstrated the ability and willingness to complete moderately labour intensive tasks and also perform basic maintenance of equipment used in the field.

Candice-Giscombe


Candice Giscombe
Position: Senior Laboratory Technician


Candice is a trained lab technician at EHAS’ Quality & Environmental Health Laboratory. Her training includes (but is not limited to): calibrating multiple equipment, keeping inventory, preparation of apparatus and environmental monitoring. She also plays a critical role in the daily functions of the lab by providing support to Chemical Analysts in the form of fundamental testing. Additionally, Ms. Giscombe is tasked with the upkeep and maintenance of the overall aesthetics of the lab environment. Her efficiency, focus and hard work make her an invaluable member of the ESL team.

Valrie-Downer


Valerie Paisley-Downer
Position: Laboratory Assistant


Valerie Paisley is responsible for the maintenance of the Microbiology Laboratory environment. She plays an integral role in the daily operation by; assisting with media and reagents preparation, equipment maintenance activities, Participates in and assists with the execution of training exercises and conducts quality control checks ensuring that the testing environment meet the requirements necessary for analysis.

Mrs. Paisley is also responsible for inventory management thus ensuring that supplies are always available. She assists with the receiving and examination of reagents and equipment to ensure they meet the labs specific requirements, at all times ensuring that the Quality Management System is adhered to.

Her constant determination to complete any given task makes her an important asset to the ESL team.
